Rent receipt format: what a rent receipt should contain
A rent receipt is a written proof that the tenant paid rent to the landlord. Tenants often need it to claim house rent allowance (HRA) from an employer, and landlords keep it as a record. There is no single official format, but a good receipt includes the details below.
What to include
- The word "Rent receipt" and a receipt number.
- The date of the receipt.
- The tenant's full name and the landlord's full name.
- The address of the rented property.
- The rent amount in figures and in words.
- The period the rent covers, for example the month and year.
- The mode of payment: cash, UPI, bank transfer or cheque.
- The landlord's signature.
- The landlord's PAN, where required.
About the landlord's PAN
For HRA claims, employers commonly ask for the landlord's PAN when the yearly rent is above a limit, which has been 1 lakh rupees. Tax rules can change, so confirm the current requirement with your employer or a tax professional.
Tips
- Make one receipt for each month, with the correct month on it.
- Prefer UPI or bank transfer, because they leave a payment record.
- Keep a copy. Both landlord and tenant should store the receipts.
